Join UC-AFT
Become a union member - download the application form here.
You are not automatically a member of the union. You are a member of Unit 18 or Unit 17, the bargaining units in which you are represented in collective bargaining by UC-AFT. If you sign up as a member, your payroll deduction amount stays the same. It costs you nothing to join.
This fall, you received a 3% cost of living increase while Senate faculty received none. You will receive another 3% increase next fall, no matter what sort of wage freezes other non-represented employees must suffer in the current budget situation.
Our union has negotiated one of the best job security contracts in the nation for non-tenure-track faculty members. Under our contract, you have the right to a continuing appointment after an excellence review in your sixth year, as well as a fair process for getting considered for reappointments in the first 6 years.
Last year’s bargaining team also negotiated reduced workloads for composition and foreign language instructors, along with a new workload enforcement process for any Non-Senate Faculty member burdened with increased class sizes or other uncompensated workload increases.
As a member, you will have the right to vote for or against contract ratification. The entire Unit 18 contract – the Memorandum of Understanding – expires July 2010, and negotiations will commence sometime in 2009.
As a member, you will receive more frequent communications about union activities, and other important issues facing our members.
As a member, you will be eligible for various supplemental insurance programs, mortgage loans, a credit card with a good cash rebate deal, and various discounts etc, through AFT’s Union Plus program.
As a member, you will be part of a statewide organization of academics working together to address the challenges faced by Non-Senate Faculty at UC. Your involvement matters.
